The full guide

A home golf simulator is three things: a launch monitor that reads the ball, a screen or enclosure to hit into, and a room that can hold your swing. The first two are on every store page. The room is where most buyers get it wrong: a radar unit that sits behind you needs 14 to 16 feet of depth, a ceiling-mounted camera needs a ceiling inside a narrow window, and a driver at the top of the swing needs more height than most basements have. On top of that, several launch monitors charge a yearly fee before you can play a single course.

On November 7, 2026 we read the product pages of 31 launch monitors, 35 enclosure sizes and 184 complete packages at two US simulator stores, Shop Indoor Golf and Rain or Shine Golf, with their prices in dollars, the space they publish and the subscriptions they mention.

How we work. We have not tested any launch monitor or enclosure. We read the product pages of two US stores, Shop Indoor Golf and Rain or Shine Golf, on November 7, 2026, and we quote what they publish: space needed, ceiling window, subscription fees, price. When a figure is not published, we say so. Calculations are marked [calc].

Two tools to start: Will it fit? (your ceiling, width and depth against what each launch monitor and enclosure needs) and the real 3-year cost (hardware plus software).

1. The room decides before the budget

Shop Indoor Golf's space guide gives the general rules: a ceiling of 8 feet is "the absolute minimum", 9 feet or more is "optimal"; a room "9'-10' feet wide is the minimum", 14 feet to centre the tee for both right- and left-handed players; and an 18 ft depth "is optimal", with the tee "about 10'-12' feet" from the screen and "a 7' space behind the tee". Then each launch monitor adds its own needs, which depend on where it sits:

  • Behind the ball (radar units such as the Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO, FlightScope Mevo Gen2): the most depth. Rain or Shine Golf lists "14' depth minimum" for the R10 and "16' D (8' feet sensor to tee, with 8' feet of ball flight)" for the Mevo Gen2.
  • Beside the ball (camera units such as Square Golf, SkyTrak, Foresight GC3, Bushnell Launch Pro, Garmin R50): usually "Enough Space to Swing Your Club", with no minimum ball flight.
  • On the ceiling (Uneekor EYE XO and XR, Trackman iO, ProTee VX, VTrack, NVISAGE N1): nothing on the floor, but a ceiling window, for example "9.5 to 10 ft ceiling height at mounting position" for the Trackman iO.

Room depth and width for every unit: golf simulator room size. Ceiling: golf simulator ceiling height, with a way to measure your own swing.

2. The price on the box is not the price over three years

The $499.99 Garmin R10 and the $549.99 Rapsodo MLM2PRO cost almost the same on the shelf. Add course play for three years and the gap opens: $99 a year for Garmin Golf against $199.99 a year for Rapsodo, per the comparison table on Rain or Shine Golf's R10 page, so $796.99 against $1,149.96 [calc]. At the other end, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 ($1,149) "Includes a permanent license to 8 E6 Connect simulator courses with no monthly or annual subscription." All fees, unit by unit: launch monitor subscription costs.

3. Our picks and the full comparison

The 31 launch monitors, from $199.99 to $25,995, with both stores' prices, are in the launch monitor comparison, with our picks by need under a written rule (the cheapest that meets the condition). Complete packages: golf simulator packages under $5,000. Garage builds: garage golf simulator. The two best-known budget units side by side: Garmin R10 vs Rapsodo MLM2PRO.

Frequently asked questions

How much ceiling height do I need for a golf simulator?

Shop Indoor Golf writes that 8 feet is "the absolute minimum for most golf simulators", 8.5 feet is "more accommodating" and 9 feet or more is "optimal". Ceiling-mounted launch monitors add their own window: 9.5 to 10 ft for the Trackman iO, 9 to 10 ft for the ProTee VX, 8 ft 10 in minimum for the VTrack, per Rain or Shine Golf.

How deep should a golf simulator room be?

Shop Indoor Golf calls 18 feet optimal, with the tee about 10 to 12 feet from the screen and 7 feet behind the tee. Radar units that sit behind you need more: Rain or Shine Golf lists 14 ft for the Garmin R10, 15.5 ft recommended for the Rapsodo MLM2PRO and 16 ft for the FlightScope Mevo Gen2.

Do launch monitors need a subscription?

Some do, some do not. On the pages we read, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 includes 8 E6 Connect courses with no yearly fee, while Garmin course play costs $99 to $100 a year and Foresight course play starts at $199 for Silver plus $295 for Course Pass [calc: $494 a year]. Our 3-year cost tool adds it all up.
