The general rule

Shop Indoor Golf's space guide: "Typically, a ceiling of 8 feet high is the absolute minimum for most golf simulators. While 8.5 feet high is more accommodating, a height of 9 feet or above is optimal." Rain or Shine Golf says of its SwingBay 8x10 enclosure: "A minimum ceiling height of 9 feet works for most players, though 10 feet or more gives full swing clearance". Both are general rules: what decides is your swing with your longest club.

How we compare

Windows as written in Rain or Shine Golf's specifications, November 7, 2026. Left and right handed: as stated on the Shop Indoor Golf or Rain or Shine Golf page. "Not published": the page gives no height.

Measure your swing

  1. Stand where the tee will be, in your golf shoes, on your mat if you have it.
  2. With your driver, make three slow full swings while a helper watches the highest point of the clubhead.
  3. Hold the club at that point; the helper measures floor to top of clubhead.
  4. Keep the highest reading and add it to Will it fit?, which shows your clearance.
  5. Count beams, lights and garage door tracks as ceiling.

We do not turn your height into a ceiling figure: no store we read publishes such a formula, and swings differ.

Enclosure heights

The enclosure must fit under the ceiling. Heights of the 35 sizes in our check are in the room size guide: from 7 ft 11 in to 10 ft 4 in [calc from the published sizes].

Frequently asked questions

Is an 8 ft ceiling enough for a golf simulator?

It is the floor, not the comfort zone. Shop Indoor Golf calls 8 feet "the absolute minimum for most golf simulators" and warns it "often requires golfers to curtail their backswing or refrain from using longer clubs like woods and drivers". Measure your own swing before buying.

What if my ceiling is higher than 10 ft?

Some ceiling units have a narrow window. Rain or Shine Golf writes for the ProTee VX: "Ceilings taller than 10 feet need an extender mount." For the Trackman iO it mentions "the ability to drop the unit into that operating window from a higher ceiling".

Which enclosure fits under an 8 ft 6 in ceiling?

In our check, enclosures 8 ft or 8 ft 4 in tall: the SwingBay 8x10 and simDIY 8x10 (8 ft), the SIG8 and SIG10 (8 ft 4 in) and several Carl's Place and SIG DIY sizes. The enclosure must also leave you room to swing.
